Day 85: The Week In Review , June 1-7, 2020

The Week in Review - The Walker Percy Weekend that Wasn’t Edition.

In a normal year this weekend would have marked the celebration of The Walker Percy Weekend, but there has been nothing normal about this year. To mark the occasion I decided to only feature books this week that were in some way related to Walker Percy or The Walker Percy Weekend, but I still wanted to blend genres over the course of the week so the picking was quite interesting.

We had a cookbook based on A Confederacy of Dunces in A Confederacy of Dunces Cookbook. Walker Percy’s own non-fiction essays in Signposts in a Strange Land. A guide to reading all of Walker Percy’s novels by Weekend alum Jessica Hooten Wilson in Reading Walker Percy’s Novels. Then we talked about the memoir Congratulations, Who are you again by Harrison Scott Key who had entertained us all at the closing talk a few years ago (and was set to come back this year). And finally we revisited Hillbilly Elegy by last year’s guest JD Vance.

There were so many more I could have recommended . I purposely did not choose books by Rod Dreher and Walter Isaacson because I had just recommended a book by each of them recently. Mid-week a new book came into the store I, John Kennedy Toole which is a novel about the life of John Kennedy Toole, author of A Confederacy of Dunces. I have not recommended this one yet because I have not yet finished itbut if the rest of the book is anything like the first few chapters you can rest assured that you will read a recommendation of it soon.

So, sorry to not cap off the first weekend in June with The Walker Percy Weekend but this will have to do for now.
