Day 356: Great Quotes from Great Women

Chatting Books Online day 356. March is Women's History Month so to honor that today's recommended book is Great Quotes From Great Women: from Marie Curie to Michelle Obama - inspiring words from women who have shaped our world.

Oprah Winfrey once said" The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude". This is just one of many quotes in this little book that really resonated with me. I have always loved an inspirational quote and so this book of quotes by women like Marie Curie, Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey , but also by women like Meryl Streep, Harriet Tubman and even Amy Poehler is one in which I have found inspiration - and I hope you do too.

This hardcover, gift-sized book sells for $ 15.95 a copy.

Day 355: The Book of Longings

Chatting Books Online Day 355. Today's recommended book is The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd.

When I first heard about this book I did not think it was for me, but I kept hearing good things so I gave it a read. The reason I did not immediately dive in was that it is written as a memoir of a woman name Ana, who was the wife of Jesus and the sister of Judas. I could not imagine how this could possibly be written with due respect but let me say that Sue Monk Kidd did a beautiful job of weaving a fictional yet reverential story that ties in just about every New Testament story ever told in a way that at once seems perfectly plausible and also completely respectful of my Christian beliefs. In each new chapter I looked forward to see how she could tie together what I knew was coming but could not see being played out with the additional character of "the wife" . This book is a thought provoking page turner .

It is currently only available in hardcover at $28.00 a copy, but spoiler alert , it is scheduled to be released in paperback at $17 a copy on March 23, 2021. So let us know if you prefer hardcover now or paperback at the end of the month (assuming things are not rescheduled or delayed) .

Day 354: Dolly Parton, Songteller

Chatting Books Online Day 354. Today's recommended book is Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics. This is a book we have waited , and waited for as backorders kept us anticipating it for months.

In this big beautiful hardcover book Dolly Parton tells us the story of her life using the lyrics of her songs that played a part in that part of her life as the introduction to each memory. You really get a feel for what was going through Dolly's head both as she was writing each song and now as she reflects on those periods of her life. Illustrated with many pictures of Dolly , her costumes, and even of her handwritten song lyrics as she worked out some of the songs it is really a full window into Dolly's life.

Starting with a song she wrote as a three year old and continuing on to the present day you get to see how Dolly grew into the person, and performer she is today . She is , as she says, a Songwriter and a Storyteller and uses her music to do both making her a Songteller.

Hardcover, large format (12" x 9.5") book , 379 pages, currently sells for $50 a copy

Day 353: Mad Libs!

Chatting Books Online Day 353. Today's recommendation is : Mad Libs !

It has become apparent to me that kids today do not know what Mad Libs are - and quite frankly this horrifies me, and also explains quite a bit about the death of the adverb in today's lexicon but that is a rant for another day.

Mad Libs are a fantastically fun , vocabulary building, word game that my brothers and I loved in the 70's. First invented and published in the 1950's the game gives story templates on any number of topics. For instance in Star Wars Mad Libs all of the story templates will be Star Wars related.

You need at least 2 people to play. One holds the book and asks the others for a list of parts of speech. "Give me an adjective" , "now give me an adverb" , "a proper noun" etc. As you get answers from the others the story teller writes their answers in the blanks provided without telling the others what the story is about or letting them read the text. The more outlandish your answers the better! After all of the blanks have been filled in the story teller will read the completed story back to the group substituting the team's answers for the blanks - and try not to laugh too much. It really is funny, as you might imagine with four brothers there was a lot of potty related answers in the ones we completed as children. And the best part? Children are learning word usage along the way. - you can't tell me an adverb if you don't know what one is!

We carry a variety of Mad Libs titles each selling for $4.99 a copy.

To purchase a copy come see us at the shop during business hours or you can call or message me to have a copy shipped to you .Now mask up , sit back, and enjoy the fun !
